Supermarket Sampler - October 2006
"Try these Halloween Treats"

Sweets may soothe the savage-looking Halloween costumed beasts wandering around your neighborhood with open bags next week, but they frighten the registered dietitians like Bonnie. Sampling some of the products designed for distribution on this hellish holiday is, conversely, like heaven to junk-foodie Carolyn.

We tried to put our individual prejudices aside in compiling this new list of new or improved treats – mostly sinful, a few saintly – with which to appease visiting ghosts and goblins this Halloween.

Late July Organic Mini Classic Rich Sandwich Crackers. Cheddar Cheese, and Peanut Butter. 99 cents per 1.125-ounce snack bag. New mini versions of all-natural takeoffs on Ritz Bits and Lance snack crackers that we have both praised: Bonnie, for being trans fat-free; Carolyn, for tasting almost as good as the non-natural competition.

"Summer Snacks Up"

Late July is more than just the height of tourist season on Cape Cod. It’s also a line of organic crackers from the Bernard family – who founded Cape Cod Potato Chips back in 1980.

The Bernards since have sold the potato chip business, but their new company – founded two years ago – is growing rapidly. Late July is about to complete a new factory (15 Hinckley Rd, Hyannis) and will more than double its work force.

President Nicole Bernard Dawes credits the explosion in organic-foods production for her ability to create flavorful, organic snack foods. “We tasted 50 organic cheeses to make our cheddar cheese crackers,” she said. “Twenty years ago, there were none available.

“We’re snack makers,” she continued. “We want our products to taste great. If they don’t taste great, what’s the point?”

"A Better Cracker"

Hydrogenated oil is the lifeblood of a tasty cracker, so finding one that tastes good without it is a rare thing indeed. Not only are there none of those much-maligned trans fats in these new Late July sandwich crackers ($3.79 for a 6-ounce box; $5.49 for a tray of 1.5-ounce packages), they are also organic, and filled with thin layers of organic peanut butter and organic cheddar cheese. The peanut butter is salty and sweet, the cheese is creamy and aged – the perfect complement to the flaky, buttery crackers that complete this tempting midafternoon or midnight snack.

"Hit or Miss"

Late July Organic Cheddar Cheese Sandwich Crackers.
This product comes from the same people who started Cape Cod Potato Chips.  Of course, sandwich crackers with cheese have long been a popular snack item commonly found in convenience stores, vending machines, and kids’ lunchboxes.  So, what makes this one special?  They’ve left out the hydrogenated oils, which means no trans fats. Also, they’re made with aged organic cheddar cheese from dairy farms where healthy cows eat organic feed and are never given hormones or antibiotics. The result is a delicious snack without the "junk".

Sandwich cookies get smarter with arrival of Late July - July 11, 2007
Organic Snack Maker Launches New Line of Irresistibly Better Cookies

HYANNIS, Mass. – July 11, 2007 – Fans of rich dark chocolate, real Madagascar vanilla beans and green tea get the treat of their dreams with the arrival of Late July Organic Snacks’ new line of mouth-watering organic sandwich cookies.  Both flavors, rich Dark Chocolate and creamy Vanilla Bean with Green Tea hit store shelves this summer, just in time for picnics, family vacations and back-to-school lunch boxes.

Late July’s newest offerings are like the sandwich cookies you remember as a kid, but all grown up.  They deliver outstanding flavor using the finest organic ingredients like dark chocolate and whole grains with unexpected benefits like antioxidants and fiber giving new meaning to the term “smart cookie.”

“Our mission was to take the ordinary sandwich cookie and upgrade it into something I would love and feel good about sharing with my children.  Finding the right ingredients and developing the recipes has been a long and intense process,” said co-founder Nicole Dawes, “but it was worth it when I saw the look on my son’s face when he tried the first one.”

Even though this is Late July’s first line of cookies, Dawes is no stranger to cookie making.  As a child while her father and Late July co- founder was busy building their first family business Cape Cod Potato Chips, she spent summer vacations baking cookies from scratch and selling them to local delis in a wagon. These recipes have truly been a lifetime in the making.

The new offerings include:

  • Organic Dark Chocolate: Intense and decadent, Late July makes its own antioxidant rich organic dark chocolate using simple, pure ingredients like cocoa and Madagascar vanilla. The irresistible filling is sandwiched between two delicious organic chocolate cookies made with whole grains.
  • Organic Vanilla Bean with Green Tea: A hint of sweet green tea, one of nature’s best sources of antioxidants, is the perfect complement for pure Madagascar vanilla, including the whole seeds packed with flavor. The result is the classic you grew up with, but with a twist – a filling that’s rich and creamy, but not overly sweet, and the added benefit of whole grains.

Convenient Snack Size for Families on the Go
Both flavors come in convenient, grab-and-go single serve sizes and boxes for the whole family.
- Take home boxes (SRP $3.99):Dark Chocolate 8.2 oz, Vanilla Bean with Green Tea 9 oz

Late July Organic Snacks Gives Mini Sandwich Crackers an Organic, Trans Fat Free Makeover - April 12, 2006
Late July's founders set out to do for sandwich crackers what they did for potato chips in the 80s.

HYANNIS, MA (April 12, 2006) – Twenty-five years ago the Bernard family, the founders of Cape Cod Potato Chips, Inc., revolutionized the snack food industry by making all-natural potato chips without trans fats, hydrogenated oils, corn syrup, artificial flavors, artificial colors or preservatives. Now with their new company, Late July Organic Snacks, they are hoping to do for mini sandwich crackers what they did for potato chips in the 80s. The company has taken creamy, organic peanut butter and mild, organic cheddar cheese and sandwiched them between mini versions of their already popular Organic Classic Rich Crackers. The result is a pair of delicious new organic snacks that are helping to reinvent the sandwich cracker from an unhealthy, much-maligned, “junk” food into a snack parents can feel good about eating and giving to their kids.

“As a working mother I'm constantly in a position where I need to give my three-year-old a snack on the run, but I'm not willing to sacrifice the quality of the ingredients for convenience,” said Nicole Bernard Dawes, Late July's President and COO. “Our mission is to produce snacks that kids and parents think taste great using simple, responsible, high quality, organic ingredients. We are proud to be the first to offer a mini sandwich cracker, one of America's most popular on-the-go snacks, that fits that bill.”

Like Late July's large sandwich crackers introduced last year, the new Organic Mini Peanut Butter and Classic Rich Sandwich Crackers and Organic Mini Cheddar Cheese and Classic Rich Sandwich Crackers are USDA certified organic. Organic ingredients are grown without the use of dangerous pesticides, chemical fertilizers, genetic engineering, hormones or antibiotics.

And like all their past snack creations, the new mini sandwich crackers contain no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives, no highly refined sweeteners (like corn syrup), no hydrogenated oils and no trans fats. Trans fats have been linked to an increase in heart disease and obesity. In September 2002, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies issued a report stating that there is no safe level of trans fats, which have become a common ingredient in hundreds of popular foods and are found in the majority of conventionally processed snack foods. Introducing the First Organic Saltine, Rich and Cheddar Cheese Crackers - March 1, 2004
Late July Organic Snacks Offers Consumers An Organic And Trans Fat Free Choice For Beloved Classic Snacks By Announcing Their New Line Of Crackers

HYANNIS, MA (March 1, 2004) -- The founders of Cape Cod Potato Chips, Inc. and Chatham Village Foods, Inc. are looking to put the comfort back in comfort food by offering consumers organic choices for some beloved snacks. Their newest venture, Late July Organic Snacks, took some of America's favorite crackers and made them organic and trans fat free.

Late July Organic Snacks initial products are organic cheddar cheese, saltine and rich crackers made without heart-clogging trans fats. All of the crisp, flaky crackers are made without any hydrogenated oils (where the trans-fats hide), preservatives and artificial flavors or colors.

“Late July Organic Snacks trans-fat-free organic crackers set a new standard for healthy snacking,” said Steve Bernard, the company's Chairman and CEO who started the company with his daughter Nicole. “We all have enough to worry about in our lives that we shouldn't have to worry about what is in the products that we eat.”

A commitment to family runs throughout Late July Organic Snacks, including its choice of farmer partners. All three trans-fat organic crackers are made with organic, soft, red winter wheat from family-owned mills, for example. These mills supply a lower gluten content wheat that combines with trans-fat free organic palm oil (not to be confused with palm kernel oil) to give Late July's crackers their flaky texture.

“Organic provides a safety net consumers can't find with other products,” said Nicole Dawes, the company's President and COO. “Buying organic is an easy step parents can take to protect their family.” (more...)

HYANNIS, MA (January 1, 2004) -- There is only one thing that can drag an accomplished entrepreneur out of retirement - his only child. Luckily for Steve Bernard, who successfully launched Cape Cod Potato Chips and Chatham Village Foods during the 80's and 90's, coming out of retirement was made easier because it was for a great idea. “I would do anything for Nicole, but after she went into detail about the concept, I began to understand her enthusiasm and really thought she was on to something,” explained Steve Bernard, co-founder of Late July Organic Snacks. “I have always been dedicated to making the best products for consumers, but this was a chance to blaze a new trail.” (more...)
